Julian Robertson Biography

Julian RobertsonJulian Robertson was born in 1933 in Salisbury, North Carolina. In 1955 he got a degree in business administration and at the University of North Carolina. After graduating, he joined the Navy and two years later he came back and started working for a New York Company “Kidder, Peabody & Co.” Robertson built his career in this company with more than twenty years experience in it, during which time he became one of the most productive stockbrokers in the company. Later he became the head of the Webster Management Corporation, which were subsidiary for money management issues for the Kidder, Peabody & Co.
In 1980 he started his own business – Tiger Management Group, which was a funding and investment/hedge fund company. Excellent managing brought him a multiple return of his investment during the years. To be more precise, investment of 8 million dollars in 1980 became return of 7.2 billion dollars in 1996. He was the best at what he did with a 32% return rate to his investors, and he held that position during 1980s and 1990s. The Tiger management became the largest fund in the world.
He wasn’t very enthusiastic about investing in tech-stock, which started to be very popular in the late 1990s, and he was avoiding it with an excuse that it would be irrational investment. That showed to be a bad decision and Tiger Management after closing all of its funds dropped to the value of 6 billion dollars.
Company’s fall was mainly the fault of the bad management and Robertson’s managerial style that was often described as autocratic.
Robertson had his own way of investing. As an autocratic manager, he would make all decisions alone with previous help from his analysts. His investment style was to have a smart idea which is based on detailed research and later making a big bat. He was against using fundamentals which probably were the reason of Tiger Management problems and the final liquidation in 2000.
After collapsing of his hedge fund, he continued to work in his own company. Also, he is great philanthropist and supporter of the resolution of environmental issues.
